Dicks Sporting Goods
DICK’S Sporting Goods was founded in 1948 when an 18-year-old Dick Stack was working at an Army surplus store in Binghamton, New York. An avid fisherman, Dick was approached by the store owner to come up with a list of products needed to get into the fishing tackle business. After Dick presented his suggestions, the owner told him he was a dumb kid and had no idea what he was doing. Dick was upset and promptly quit.

Johnny’s values were strongly shaped by his parents. Both were born in 1911 to very humble beginnings in the heart of the Ozarks in Willard, Missouri. His mother Genny was one of 10 children growing up in a two-bedroom house. His father John A. Morris grew up poor and was raised primarily by his Great Aunt. A decorated World War II veteran, John A. proudly served his country and participated in the Battle of the Bulge. Afterward he returned home to Missouri and became a successful merchant in the Springfield area.

Businessman and outdoor enthusiast Barry Goldware founded Tennis and Ski Warehouse in the Midwest as a startup business in the sports industry. Soon after, he saw potential in an untapped market for winter apparel. An avid skier himself, Barry decided to take a chance and move business operations to Houston, Texas in July of 1980 and established Sun & Ski Sports.
